Sanfte Kontraste, eine durchdringende Farbtiefe und ein magisch zeitloses Licht, das sich wie ein Schleier über jede der Fotografien zu liegen scheint: Die Bilder des Berliner Fotografen Christian Klant haben Wiedererkennungswert.

Klant arbeitet mit dem sogenannten Kollodium-Nassplattenverfahren.

Zu Beginn der 1850er entwickelt, ermöglichte das Verfahren erstmalig die Reproduktion von Bildern ohne sichtbaren Qualitätsverlust und verkürzte die Belichtungszeit im Vergleich zum bis dahin vorherrschenden Verfahren der Daguerreotypie enorm.

Abstrakte Landschaften, zeitlose Porträts oder eindrucksvolle Bewegungsstudien – mit der historischen Methode schafft Christian Klant mit jedem Bild ein Meisterwerk. Und eine Atmosphäre, als ob die Welt für einen Moment angehalten würde.

Als wir Christian vor einigen Jahren kennenlernten, waren wir natürlich sofort fasziniert von den außergewöhnlichen Fotos, die er mit seinem teilweise über 100 Jahre alten Equipment in unseren Stores aufnahm. Auch bei unserem Lifestyle-Shooting im Winter 2017 wollten wir den besonderen Vintage-Charme daraufhin nicht missen und freuten uns, als Christian sich bereit erklärte, unsere Schuhe ein weiteres Mal in Szene zu setzen.

Im Interview erzählt der Fotograf von seiner Liebe zur analogen Fotografie, den Herausforderungen beim Fashion Shooting und spricht über zukünftige Projekte.

In Zeiten der digitalen Fotografie, was fasziniert dich am Kollodium-Nassplattenverfahren?

Die Arbeit mit Großformatkameras und echten Chemikalien ist wohl das absolute Gegenteil der digitalen Fotografie. Wenn ich 10 Aufnahmen an einem Tag mache, dann ist das schon viel. Zudem sind die sogenannten Wet Plates so fertig, wie sie fotografiert werden. Kein Retuschieren, kein Photoshop – alles echt. Das bedeutet, dass ich mich sehr konzentrieren und fokussieren muss. Also mehr Qualität und weniger Quantität. Das ist schlicht die Arbeitsweise, die ich liebe.
Jedes Mal, wenn eine Wet Plate noch am Set entwickelt wird, ist es etwas besonderes. Der Moment wenn sich das fertige Bild zeigt ist einfach magisch. Da vergesse ich oft, dass es so etwas wie die digitale Fotografie gibt.

In deinem Portfolio finden sich neben Porträts vor allem viele abstrakte Fotografien. Was reizt dich an der Modefotografie?

Die Modefotografie generell empfinde ich oft als oberflächlich und ohne Aussage. Das versuche ich, mit meiner ganz eigenen Sichtweise und meiner Art zu fotografieren zu ändern. Das kann ich vor allem dann, wenn ich einen Bezug zur Marke aufbauen kann, einen Kontakt zu dem, wofür die Marke steht. Dieser Wesenskern wird dann Teil meiner Bilder.
Es reizt mich genau diese Herangehensweise, die ich auch bei Portraits und auch Landschaftsaufnahmen nutze auf die Modefotografie zu übertragen. So wird jedes Bild auch zum Portrait der Marke. Ich finde bei unserem Shooting für Zeha Berlin hat das ganz gut funktioniert.

Das erste Fotoshooting hast Du 2016 für uns gemacht. Hat sich seitdem etwas an deiner Herangehensweise verändert? Wenn ja, was?

Das erste Shooting hatte einen anderen Fokus, da wir keine Menschen fotografiert haben. Die Herangehensweise war aber sehr ähnlich. Die Bilder sollen ein Gefühl für Zeha vermitteln. Damals waren es die Stores in Berlin und einige ausgewählte Still-Live Sets. Jetzt haben wir eine People-Strecke fotografiert. Jedes Bild hat seine eigene Geschichte. Doch alle gemeinsam stammen sie aus dem Buch „Zeha Berlin“.

Wo lagen für dich besondere Herausforderungen beim Zeha Shooting?

Wir haben Anfang Dezember an unterschiedlichen Orten in Berlin fotografiert. Temperaturen von rund 5 Grad haben uns alle auf Trab gehalten. Die Chemie verhält sich anders, als bei wärmeren Temperaturen und nur wenige Stunden Tageslicht wollten wohl genutzt sein. Die wohl größte Herausforderung waren jedoch die langen Belichtungszeiten von 20 Sekunden. Manchmal sogar deutlich darüber. Aber das ganze Team von Assistent, Visagistin, Models, Styling und natürlich Zeha hat toll zusammen gearbeitet.

Auf die Frage, in welchem Genre Du als Fotograf tätig bist, antwortest Du meist mit „Menschen und Geschichten“. Welche Geschichte steckt für dich hinter den Bildern, die beim Zeha Lifestyle Shooting entstanden sind?

Zeha Berlin verkörpert für mich eine Geschichte, die sowohl in der Tradition der Marke Zeha noch zu DDR Zeiten steht, als auch gleichzeitig moderne Klänge mit z. B. den Urban Classics spielt. Beides sollte in der Strecke zum Ausdruck kommen. Auch gibt es eine Geschichte, die sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Aufnahmen mit unseren beiden Models Johanna und Thoralf zieht. Sie bringt den Stil von Zeha auf den Punkt und auch ein Augenzwinkern mit sich. Schaut Euch die Bilder an, dann werdet Ihr ihn finden.

Welche Projekte stehen dieses Jahr bei dir an? Darf man sich vielleicht sogar auf weitere Shootings mit Zeha freuen?

Die ersten Monate des Jahres habe ich viel Zeit in die Vorbereitungen zu meiner ersten Museums-Ausstellung investiert. Ich freue mich schon auf die Eröffnung Ende Mai. Daneben plane ich einige neue Aufnahmen für meine freien Strecken in ganz Europa und auch mehr Wet Plates unterschiedlichen Bereichen der Werbung.
Für Zeha haben wir noch viele gute Ideen in der Schublade, die wir im Dezember nicht umsetzen konnten. Genug Stoff für ein weiteres Kapitel der Zeha Geschichte in Bildern. Und es gibt schon erste gemeinsame Planungen für den Frühsommer.

Wetplate photoshoot at Zeha Berlin: Interview with photographer Christian Klant

Mellow contrasts, penetrating depth of color, and magical light: the images of the Berlin photographer Christian Klant are distinctive and instantly recognizable.

Klant works with the collodion wet plate method. Developed at the beginning of the 1850s, this process made it possible for the first time to reproduce images without any visible loss of quality. This enormously shortened the exposure time compared to the earlier method of daguerreotype.

Whether abstract landscapes, timeless portraits, or impressive motion studies, Christian Klant is a master of this historical photographic process, creating stunning images and a special atmosphere — as if the world had stopped for a moment.

When we met Christian a few years ago, we were immediately fascinated by the extraordinary photos he took with his equipment, some of which was over 100 years old, in our stores. We love the vintage charm of his photos and were thrilled to have another opportunity to work with him at our lifestyle shoot in the winter of 2017.

In the age of digital photography, what fascinates you about the wet plate collodion process?

Working with large format cameras and real chemicals is probably the opposite of digital photography. If I take 10 shots in one day, that’s a lot. And the so-called wet plates are finished as they are photographed. No retouching, no Photoshop — all real. That means I have to concentrate and focus a lot. So, more quality and less quantity. That’s just the way of working that I love.

Every time a wet plate is developed on set, it’s something special. The moment when the picture is finished is just magical. I often forget that there is such a thing as digital photography.

In addition to portraits, there are many abstract photographs in your portfolio. What attracts you to fashion photography?

I often feel that fashion photography, in general, is superficial and without a statement. I try to do something different with my way of photographing. Above all, when I establish a connection to the brand, I get in touch with what the brand stands for. This essence then becomes a part of my photos.

This approach appeals to me. I use the same approach with portraits and landscapes, and it transfers well to fashion photography. Every picture becomes a portrait of the brand. I think that worked quite well in our shoot for Zeha Berlin.

You made the first photo shoot for us in 2016. Has anything changed in your approach since then? If so, what?

The first shoot had a different focus because we did not photograph people, but the approach was very similar. The pictures should convey an authentic feeling for Zeha. The first time, it took place in the stores in Berlin and some selected still-live sets. This time we photographed people. Every picture has its own story, but they all come together from the same “Zeha Berlin“ book.

What were special challenges for you at the Zeha shooting?

We photographed at different locations in Berlin at the beginning of December. Temperatures of around 5 degrees kept us all busy, and we had only a few hours of daylight to work in. The biggest challenge was the long exposure times of 20 seconds. Sometimes even longer. But the whole team of assistants, make-up artists, models, stylists, and of course Zeha, did a great job together.

In response to the question, in which genre are you working as a photographer, you usually answer with „people and stories“. What is your story behind the pictures that were taken during the Zeha Lifestyle Shooting?

For me Zeha Berlin represents a story that combines the tradition of the original Zeha brand from GDR times with a modern sensibility. Both should be reflected in the shoot. There is another story, a common theme through the photos, with our two models Johanna and Thoralf. This story reveals a more playful side of the brand. Look at the pictures, you’ll see.

Which projects are coming up this year? Further shootings with Zeha?

During the first months of the year, I invested a lot of time preparing for my first museum exhibition. I’m looking forward to the opening in late May. I’m also planning some new photos for my travels across Europe, and more wet plate photography in different areas of advertising.

For Zeha we still have a lot of good ideas which we couldn’t implement in December. Enough stuff for another chapter of Zeha’s story in photos. And there are already initial plans to work together with Zeha in early summer.
